Week 4 ( 26/03/8 - 30/03/18 ) LITERATURE REVIEW WEEK

Monday

Today, in class we were focusing on the literature review so I will try to get all the literature review and good sources of information which will help me to infer as much as I can for developing my project.

Literature review

Chris Middleton. ( 2004) THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO DIGITAL AUDIO. United Kingdom: I L E X.

This is a book that is related to the beginners in digital audio and studio mixing. basically, this book is a good source of information for me, because I want to create sound effects, beats and vocals into my composition but I do not have a wide knowledge in language to express myself technically as I would like to express. Therefore this book is really useful to get more language and critical thought about what I am producing and how I am producing it.

Also, It provides a huge ranges of glossary that might help me to interact with Logic Pro x with more confidence because I will implement my vocabulary and therefore I will know which kind of settings are the right to fit into my tracks. However the propose of this book is more informative and educative for me into my project because It is not a direct context that fits into the context of my project but anyway it is helpful for me to help myself with creating new stuff and sounds into the digital programme of Logic Pro.

LITERATURE REVIEW

This is a website, which basically gave some important information about the composition of reggae

"Compose a reggae style piece in 4/4. Use strong accents on beats two and four with most of the instruments playing the accompaniment resting on beat one. Use a two-chord sequence such as C to D minor or D minor to A minor. Use a prominent bass line. If you record the piece, add some dub effects such as echo and delay."

This is really important information because the reggae song that I am composing 'Nine letters' is in D major key. However,  here says that I have to use a predominant bass line, echo and delay, that will give a significant accent to the song. However, in my track, I am mixing the percussion and drums used in trap and I am fitting them to the instruments of the song. It means that if I use a lot of delay in the drums of my song It will create distortion, and less clarity of the dry beats that the trap genre has. But, it was a really important information because this helps to have clear the technique of keeping the accent in the second and the fourth beat. That is the key of keeping the essence of reggae in the song, even if the songs tens to sound different for its "trappy " beats if I can give my on term for the beats of the trap as "trappy". Anyway, As long as the beats are significant in the beat two and four, the song will sound reggae.

I have used this page to quote this video, which has been so helpful about the important roles that the instruments in reggae have. It is very important to identify which does what we need to complete a reggae song. These kinds of videos are quite completed, because they specify very well, what we need to know to compose reggae. Also, the interesting ideas of how to use minor pentatonic scales to complement the skills of making reggae.

This is another video, from the same page, where it is explained the way as we can use the bass line as a dominant pattern from the reggae. It is very interesting to look at this kind of ideas because if I am aiming to develop a song mixed with Trap and reggae. Definitely, I need to emphasise the Trap bass in my song by using the right syncopation of the bass.

Also, on this page, I have found very remarkable information about reducing frequencies and equalising the sound of the guitar and bass properly to get that clean sound, which is also a really important information that I need to get a clean sound of my song in reggae.

Thursday

Today, I am going to focus my literature review in a research about pieces of advice on how to compose pop music.

https://www.gold.ac.uk/news/scientists-find-key-to-writing-catchy-pop-hits/ (20/04/18 AT 13:00)

This is a page which has an article that talks about the key to making pop music by the recognisable melodies that the human memorises by the ear. He calls the "earworm".

This article is quite interesting for my project because it gives the really clear point of view that I did not think about. I mean, psychologically, the mind can contain catchy songs. the scientist Dr Kelly Jakubowski discovered a key for getting catchy pop songs and uses as a reference to Lady Gaga's songs.

For example:

"A 3,000-person study led by Dr Kelly Jakubowski discovered that ‘earworms’ are usually faster, with a fairly generic and easy-to-remember melody. They also have unique intervals, such as leaps or repetitions, which set the track apart from the average pop song."

-https://www.gold.ac.uk/news/scientists-find-key-to-writing-catchy-pop-hits/ (20/04/18 AT 13:00).

This information is very important because If I engage the audience by making catchy songs that they will internally remember them easily. the music is psychologically powerful and trampy.

This relates straightaway to my project because I am trying to get a reggaeton and pop song that creates that catchy melody and also that it can be easy to remember. Also, to motivate people to learn Spanish.

BARTLETT AND BARTLETT - PRATICAL RECORDING TECHNIQUES (The Step- By Step Approach to Professional Audio Recording) FIFTH EDITION

This is a book that briefly informs what kind of instruments we should record first and what kind of microphones we have to use to every single instrument and depending on the loudness that they project with the frequencies.

Also, it talks about the importance of having stands and organisation in the studio, how the recording can be influenced by the way as we organise the sessions.

It helps my project in the sense that I learn how to prepare the sessions at the time of recording my pieces, the book really has good and important points to look at.

MASTERING AUDIO the art and the science - second edition by BOB KATZ

This book is quite interesting because it talks about how wearing a different kind of cloths or hat might absorb the frequencies of your audio, it sounds weird but basically, the science based on this book affects the whole mastering of the audio.

Also, it talks about how to create appropriate loudness without changing the levels to do not create distortion. Nowadays, most of the modern music which the actual pop, trap and all this kind music use a kind of equalisation that persuades the listener by using the loudness but with soft managed levels, and all that kind of information is used on this book. As well the explanation of the right numbers used on the decibels to produce professional sound in the stereo out.

THE COMPOSER'S HANDBOOK BY BRUCE COLE

This book talks about the way as the composer have to experiment with exercises to be more creative and developing techniques of composition. This book relates to my project because it is used the figures of reading music to create the lyrics of the song by parting from that figures of the melody in the music. For example one of my songs uses unison melody at the same time of singing the chorus, sounds completely together with the instrumentalisation.

It is quite interesting to interact with exercises that this book provides to help myself to develop changes in the structure of my songs, also to give different feelings and emotion.

However, It also talks about the main melody of the composition that will make that the listener remember it all the time.
