Workshop class week 3 (26/09/2018-27/09/2018)

DISCO - STYLE


Disco is a genre influenced by R&B and previous genres in the 1970s such as the soul at the end of the 1960s.  The pop was the top of the head but once the Disco arrived it started to be very catchy and even collaborated by Latin influence performances.


Also, Disco started to be recognised by the strong use of strings and musical unison phrases after the base melody created by the piano and the guitar. With beats taken from the funk which were clearly syncopated. The sound tends to be very bright and surrounding by harmonies in the background.

 The 4/4 strong kick beat is one important feature of disco because the rhythmical speed makes of Disco danceable music. As well as the instruments used such as the bright electric guitar sound, synths and strong drumming.

Today at workshop class, we were introduced into the disco music which clearly seems to be very speedy and rhythmic. However, there are many aspects such as the tempo, the syncopation, the structure and the dynamic which make the denotative mood of the genre.

 Previously, our teacher assigned us to rehearse a cover of 'Freak out by Chic, which for instance, we did not know how to play it. The interesting improvement from today was that we assembled that song easily by structuring the melody and getting the key of the song.

It was contrasting the fact that the song is quite mechanic and monotonic. However, the song is very speedy and syncopated. I would say that the challenge of this song is to assemble everything rhythmically and musically coordinated, as well as the vocals.

Anyway, during today's workshop, we worked in the song which is going well through the continuous rehearsal.

Today at workshop class, we rehearsed the previous song and we assembled the song properly. I would say that the struggle is to keep the tempo and to keep the syncopation linked to the bass, guitar and drums.

However, we felt that we had that disco style in this cover, but also we were arranging more patterns to get the song more interesting and with more disco soul.

The teacher was very helpful in giving ideas for arranging the songs and also giving better feedback from weak points of the song that we needed to improve.

I think that today the rehearsal enriched more our confidence playing a disco song, as well as the good attitude of the workshop band.

Half term holiday advance

In this half term, I will be working on my song "I wanna know you". 4th/april/2018 Today, I recorded the introduction of the song, but first of all, I remembered one of the tips from one of literature review which says that always we have to record first the instruments with louder frequency, but I started recording the base of the guitar and then I started adding the instruments. This song is in pop but I will add the reggaeton patterns at the chorus. This is a recording of the introduction of the song: The following audio is the same recording but with the effects on it. I have added EQ, Compressor, Pedals, reverb, delay and a phaser to create that sound: the next audio is the intro with the bass melody and the piano melody. Bernhoft who uses the looping on his music to creates the melody in every single instrument. he uses a dynamical and an interesting range of different acoustic instruments, such as the bass, the percussion, the hooks and the second voices. Also, he uses his voice to create repetitive phrases that contain like a Dj effect at the end of the phrase of the hook. He uses the loop pedal very well to create a live recording which is very interesting because he recreates an acoustic kind of instruments just with the guitar and his voices.
